Suggested Activities for the 2008 Health Challenge Scorecard.

Week 1 (March 31 - April 4)

1. Eat a healthy breakfast every day this week. Go to this website for suggestions. http://www.deliciousdecisions.org/ee/index.html

2. Everytime you get into the car this week, buckle your seatbelt or car seat. Ask everyone who is riding in your car to buckle up too.

Suggestions: You might say, "Please fasten your seatbelt before the care moves." "Please fasten your seatbelts, I want everyone to have a safe ride." With children, make it a contest to see who buckles up the quickest.

3. Make a list of emergency numbers and make all your family members aware of the location of the list.

4. Eat a serving of vegetables every day this week. This might be a good opportunity to try a new vegetable at lunch or dinner time. 5. Do not watch television or play video games for 3 days this week. Turn off that television and go outside and play. It if is too cold to go outside, play a board game with other family members. Feel free to use your computer for school assignments.

Week 2 (April 7 - April 11)

1. Participate in 20 minutes of physical activity at least three times this week. Suggested activities: Walk, ride your bicycle or tricycle, jump rope, rollerblade, or participate with other family members in an organized activity like basektball, bowling or soccer. http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/physical/

2. Use the city trails once this week to walk, jog, bike or rollerblade. Lincoln has an extensive trail system throughout the city for walking, hiking, biking and in-line skating. Most trails are paved. Visit the following website www.gptn.org to obtain maps and information regarding Lincoln's trail system.

3. Count to 20 while washing your hands before meals and after using the bathroom this week. Washing your hands is one of the easiest, but most important things you can do to keep yourself healthy. 4. Check the batteries in every smoke detector in your home, including electric smoke detectors. (Children, ask an adult for help.) Choose a day each year to check your smoke detectors. Week 3 (April 14 - April 18)

1. Brush your teeth twice each day this week. (Children have an adult help if needed.) While brushing your teeth, start with the front and work your way back. Don't forget to brush the backs of your teeth, and your tongue. It might take a while, but your teeth will feel clean and your breath will be fresh. http://www.adha.org/oralhealth/brushing.htm.

2. Eat a piece of fruit each day this week. Examples: orange, apples, grapes, banana, mango, melons, pineapple. http://www.thefruitpages.com/tenreasons.shtml.

3. Read 20 minutes two times this week. (Children: ask an adult for help if needed.) Find a book of short storeis at the library and read for 20 minutes at least twice this week. http://www.creativeteachingsite.com/read1.htm.

4. Sit down to at least one meal every day with your family. (Children: help with meal preparation.) Meal time is a good time to reconnect with family members and find out what has happened in their lives that day. Take the time to share a meal with family members.

5. Volunteer to do something for someone in need. Suggestions: Kids: Help out an elderly neighbor or relative. Adults: donate blood. http://www.don8bld.org/
